coral Gables, florida

Academic - Summer 2013

Coral Gables is a uniquely luscious neighborhood, saturated with hundred year old oak trees, tall curvy cuban palms, and flowering bougainvillea. This residence was conceived as one of five environmentally conscious luxury homes with sleek lines and clean proportions.

Natural materials are brought inside and used throughout the interior.  Stone, wood, and light play a role in bringing the outdoors in.   The stairs are divided by a single landing in the middle, but also feature a duality in level.  Two thirds of the stair function for climbing activity while the other third features a unique design element with double steps.  This encourages  the viewer to slow down and look at the detail.

Incorporating 90% of the glazing on north and south facades allows the house to minimize heat gain and maximize day light.    The tall thin steel framed windows allow the resident to feel integrated into the surrounding vegetation.  The areas covered in horizontal wood cladding emphasize a sense of privacy both from inside and out.

The backyard is designed for r&r.  The eastern corner of the house is pulled back to allow the back terrace to catch the breezes from the dominant wind direction.

The white overhangs add texture to the facade but more importantly provide shade for the rooms lined with glass sliding doors.
